What

An accessibility statement informs the user about the state and accessibility of your site from a user perspective. A statement consists of these main elements:

  • Fact - where your website is now
  • Intent - what are your intentions going forward
  • TimeAn accessibility statement acknowledges the importance of trying to make your website as scales - a plan based on what are realistic time scales

Why

The intention is the most important part of the accessibility statement because it acknowledges recognised and identified accessibility issues based on set criteria provided by assistive technology users. Electronic audits such as lighthouse and WAVE further evidence challenges or successes.

The statement and the breadth of the statement is made better by the amounts of test and frequency.

The statement also notifies known accessibility issues so the user is aware and understands how to access the material in a different manner. An example would be an inaccessible pdf mentioned in the statement that maybe has a contact point to request said document in a different format.
